Fancy Footwear vs Firm Foundation
When Arunas and I discussed competing Pro-Am, shoes were a primary concern. After 14 years I had finally found Very Fine Dance Shoes (Very Fine), a company who effectively made shoes to fit my long narrow foot with several form issues. As a world champion with an extremely high profile, he was concerned. First, I needed to be able to dance in them (firm foundation) and the look or appearance on the dance floor (fancy footwear) was important to judges and to audiences. A satin court shoe with no straps and pointed toe were the basic requirement.
The style I had was a little different and included straps. I had to be careful and courteous in my explanation, convincing him of my concern and respect of his high-level profile. I just needed to remind him the shoes needed to be comfortable and a good fit so my dancing was correct and elegant. Arunas understood and after some discussion we agreed on style, heel and material.
My service representatives at Very Fine were sensitive to my personal needs but listened carefully to the concerns I expressed on behalf of Arunas. I found the staff to be people friendly, very customer oriented with extensive product knowledge. They were patient, asking me detailed questions and following up with clarity. As a customer, I remember to maintain an open mind and listen to their suggestions. Because of my foot length and narrow width, I pay more for my shoes which are non-returnable. It is important that I carefully order, and my representative helps on every turn.
Arunas has certainly done his part, talking with me about styles, toe design, straps and heel height. (I’m in my 70’s) We’ve also included attention to color and material. My current Very Fine representative (Norma) is quick to say “not the best choice” but always suggests an alternative. We have worked together for several years. I carefully listen to her, trusting that she fully understands that fancy footwork comes from a firm foundation.
I enjoy researching their catalog then comparing notes with Norma. My selections have included shoes for practice that are black with flat heels and tie-up as well as gold tone shoes with straps and low heels. When my budget allowed, I purchased special silver “sparkle” shoes for a showcase. And, yes, wanting to respect and honor Arunas, I have a pair of satin higher heels which I am waiting to wear for my next competition / performance. Very Fine Dance Shoes has a fabulous website as well as detailed catalogue. I hope you will take a look at the tantalizing carousel of shoe options for men, women, and children to include accessories!
My journey has been challenging and rewarding. Hope yours will be successful, too.
